Call to action

A call to action is any interface element that prompts users to take a specific action, most commonly a button or link. CTA design including wording, placement, and visual weight directly affects conversion and task completion.

What is a call to action in UX design?

A call to action, commonly abbreviated as CTA, is an interface element that prompts users to perform a specific action. CTAs are most commonly buttons but can also be links, banner elements, or other interactive components. They appear on landing pages, in onboarding flows, on product pages, in emails, and throughout product interfaces wherever the design intends to direct users toward a specific next step. The wording, placement, size, and visual prominence of a CTA directly affect whether users take the intended action.

How to write effective call to action copy?

Effective CTA copy is specific, action-oriented, and communicates the value or outcome of the action. Generic labels like "Submit", "Click here", or "Learn more" underperform because they do not communicate what will happen when users click. Specific labels like "Start free trial", "Download the guide", or "Book a demo" tell users exactly what they will get. Lead with a verb that describes the action and follow with the specific outcome when space allows. Match the CTA copy to the surrounding context: if the heading says "Ready to get started?", the CTA should say "Get started" not "Submit".

How does CTA placement affect conversion?

CTA placement affects conversion through Fitts's law and visual hierarchy. Primary CTAs should be large enough to be easy to click or tap, positioned where users' attention naturally falls after reading the surrounding content, and visually dominant relative to other actions on the page. Following the Von Restorff effect, the CTA should be visually distinctive from surrounding elements. Placing CTAs above the fold ensures users see them without scrolling, though research shows users will scroll to CTAs when content above the fold establishes sufficient value to motivate action.
